Vaillant ecoTEC

A German boiler, set up for your home

Vaillant is a German manufacturer, and its gas boilers in the UK are sold under the ecoTEC name. ecoTEC pro models are combis. The ecoTEC plus range is wider, with combi, system and regular versions. We see a lot of both in Croydon, from flats near East Croydon to family homes in Purley.

What makes a Vaillant work well is the same as any boiler: the right type, the right output and controls that let it run gently rather than switching hard on and off. That’s where most of our advice goes, and it’s the part a brand name can’t fix on its own.

We fit all the major brands, so our advice isn’t tied to one make. If a Vaillant suits your home, we’ll fit one. If your existing Vaillant just needs fixing, see Vaillant boiler repair first.

Before you pick a model

Four things that decide which ecoTEC

Combi, system or regular

A combi suits most one-bathroom homes. A system boiler with a cylinder suits homes where two bathrooms are used at once. A regular boiler keeps loft tanks.

Output in kW

For a combi, hot water demand sets the size more than the radiators do. Bigger isn’t better if your mains can’t feed it.

Your mains flow

A combi can only deliver as much hot water as comes in from the street. We measure it rather than guess.

The controls

Vaillant makes its own controls for its boilers. Some third-party thermostats can only switch a Vaillant on and off rather than adjusting its output.

What good looks like

What goes into a Vaillant installation

The boiler is only one part of the job. This is everything around it that we fit, check or replace.

  1. 1

    The right boiler, properly sized

Chosen for your hot water demand and the home’s heat loss, with mains pressure and flow measured on the survey. Not just the biggest one on the van.

  2. 2

A new flue, in a legal position

Flue terminals must sit clear of windows, doors, boundaries and eaves. A new flue kit goes in with every boiler.

  3. 3

    Magnetic system filter

Catches the rust and sludge that circulate in older systems before they reach the boiler’s heat exchanger.

  4. 4

Gas supply sized for the boiler

Combis can need more gas than the boiler they replace. The pipe from the meter is checked and upgraded if it’s too small.

  5. 5

    Condensate drain that won’t freeze

Routed inside to a drain where possible. Outside runs are kept short, insulated and wide enough not to block in a frost.

  6. 6

    Controls that meet Boiler Plus

Time and temperature control as a minimum, and on a combi an extra energy-saving measure such as a smart thermostat with optimisation.

  7. 7

    System cleaned and protected

Radiators and pipes flushed, then dosed with inhibitor to slow new corrosion. Required by the regulations and by every manufacturer.

  8. 8

    Commissioned and signed off

Gas pressure and combustion checked with an analyser, the Benchmark checklist completed, Building Control notified and the warranty registered.

Installation day

Your Vaillant installation day

A like-for-like replacement is usually done in a day. Conversions and moving the boiler add a day or two, and we’ll tell you the plan in advance.

  1. 01 · Arrival

Dust sheets down, water and gas off

We protect floors and the route to the boiler, then isolate the gas, water and power.

  2. 02 · Morning

    Old boiler out

The old boiler is drained and removed. If tanks or a cylinder are going too, they come out now.

  3. 03 · Midday

    System cleaned

The radiators and pipes are flushed so the new boiler starts on clean water.

  4. 04 · Afternoon

New boiler, flue and filter in

The new boiler goes up with its flue, filter, condensate drain and controls, and the pipework is tidied.

  5. 05 · Commissioning

    Tested and set up

Gas tightness and combustion are checked with an analyser, inhibitor is added and the flow temperature set for efficiency.

  6. 06 · Before we leave

    Shown how it works

A walk-through of the boiler and controls, the Benchmark checklist handed over, and the warranty and Building Control paperwork underway.

After we leave

Getting the most from a new ecoTEC

A few things keep it efficient and keep the warranty in place.

  • Warranty registered

Vaillant warranties need registering after installation, and the length depends on the model and how it’s registered. We register it in your name.

  • Book the annual service

An annual service keeps the warranty valid and catches small problems early. We service Vaillant boilers too.

  • Flow temperature set sensibly

A condensing boiler is most efficient when the water going to the radiators isn’t too hot. We set it up and show you how to adjust it.

  • Keep the paperwork

The Benchmark checklist and the Building Regulations certificate belong with the house. You’ll need them if you sell.

FAQ

Vaillant installation questions

Is a Vaillant worth paying more for?

For many homes it’s a sound choice, but not the only one. Vaillant boilers are widely fitted and engineers know them well, which helps with servicing and parts. A well-sized boiler from another major brand will also do the job. We’ll tell you honestly if the extra isn’t buying you anything for your home.

What’s the difference between ecoTEC pro and ecoTEC plus?

ecoTEC pro models are combis. ecoTEC plus is the wider range, with combi, system and regular versions. Outputs and features vary by model, so we choose the model for your home rather than by name.

Will my smart thermostat work with a Vaillant?

It depends on the thermostat. Vaillant’s own controls are designed for its boilers. Some third-party smart thermostats work fully, and others can only switch the boiler on and off. We’ll tell you which is which before we fit anything.

My Vaillant is only a few years old. Should I replace it?

Probably not. Check whether it’s still under warranty first, then look at our Vaillant boiler repair page for the common faults. We’ll only suggest a new boiler if a repair isn’t worth it.

How long is the Vaillant warranty?

It depends on the model and how it’s registered, and it needs an annual service to stay valid. We register it for you after installation and tell you what your model comes with on the quote.
