Where people move it

The usual reasons to move a boiler

New kitchen

Out of the way of new units, or into a dedicated cupboard. Plan it with your kitchen fitter.

Into the loft

Frees the most space downstairs. Needs safe access for servicing.

Out of the airing cupboard

Common after a combi conversion, when the cylinder has gone.

Out of a bedroom

Quieter bedrooms and more space. Usually moved to the kitchen or a utility room.

Into the garage

Possible, with frost protection for pipes and condensate.

Extension or loft conversion

Building work changes where the flue can go. We’ll work with your builder on the position.

The work

What moving a boiler involves

  • New gas supply run

Gas pipe extended to the new position and sized for the boiler, or upgraded if the old run is too small.

  • Water and heating pipes

Flow, return and (for a combi) hot and cold water re-routed, neatly clipped and boxed where needed.

  • A new flue

Through an outside wall or the roof, positioned to meet the rules on windows, doors, boundaries and eaves.

  • Condensate route

A drain for the boiler’s condensate, routed inside where possible so it can’t freeze.

  • Making good the old spot

Old pipes capped and the old flue hole sealed. Plastering and decorating are left to you or your builder.

  • Paperwork

Moving a boiler is notifiable work. We notify Building Control through the Gas Safe Register.

Moving it because you’re converting from a system or back boiler? See combi conversions. Want a new boiler in the new spot? See boiler replacement.

FAQ

Boiler relocation questions

Can I move my boiler to the loft?

Often, yes. A loft boiler needs safe access for servicing: typically a fixed loft ladder, a boarded walkway, a light, and enough headroom. We’ll check your loft before quoting.

Should I replace the boiler while it’s being moved?

If it’s more than 10 years old, usually yes. Most of the cost of moving is the pipework and flue, so fitting a new boiler at the same time costs much less than doing it later.

How long does it take?

A move within the same room can be done in a day. A different room, or the loft, is usually one to two days.

Can a boiler go in a bedroom or bathroom?

Modern room-sealed boilers can go in a bedroom. Bathrooms have rules about which zones electrics can go in, so the exact position matters. We’ll advise.
