Common faults

Common Vaillant fault codes

The codes we see most. Codes vary by model, so check your manual. Never open the boiler’s casing: only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

F28: ignition failure

The boiler failed to light when it started up. Common causes are a gas supply problem, a faulty ignition lead or electrode, a gas valve fault or a frozen condensate pipe.

Try first: Check the gas is on and other appliances work, then reset once.

F29: flame lost

The flame went out while the boiler was running. Often an intermittent gas supply, a flue problem or a dirty electrode.

Try first: If it’s a prepayment meter, check there is credit, then reset once.

F22: low water pressure

Not enough water in the system to run safely. Usually a leak somewhere, a passing relief valve or a flat expansion vessel.

Try first: Re-pressurise to about 1.5 bar using the filling loop, following the manual.

F75: pump or pressure sensor fault

The boiler didn’t see the pressure change it expected when the pump started. Often the pump, the pressure sensor or air in the system.

Try first: Bleed the radiators and check the pressure, then reset.

About Vaillant boilers

Vaillant boilers we repair

Most Vaillant boilers we repair are ecoTEC plus and ecoTEC pro combis, plus system and regular ecoTEC models. Faults show as an F code on the display, and the code tells us which part to bring.

Boiler still under the manufacturer’s warranty? Contact Vaillant first, as warranty repairs are usually done by their own engineers. Out of warranty, or they can’t help? That’s where we come in. If the repair isn’t worth it on an older boiler, we’ll say so and price a replacement instead.

How it works

How a repair works

  1. 1

    Tell us what it’s doing

Pick the symptoms, the make and any fault code in the form, or call us. A photo of the display saves a lot of guesswork.

  2. 2

    We call you back

An engineer talks it through, tells you if there’s anything safe to try yourself, and books a visit if it needs one.

  3. 3

    Diagnose and fix

We find the fault, tell you what it needs and what it costs before doing anything. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take.

  4. 4

    Safety checked

Before we leave we check the boiler is burning and venting safely, and tell you honestly if it’s worth repairing again.

FAQ

Vaillant repair questions

Is my Vaillant still under warranty?

Vaillant warranty length depends on the model and the installer, and usually needs an annual service. If you think it is covered, contact Vaillant first: a repair by someone else may affect the warranty.

Why does my Vaillant keep showing F28 in winter?

In cold snaps the most common cause is a frozen condensate pipe outside. Pouring warm (not boiling) water along the pipe usually clears it. If it keeps happening, the pipe needs re-routing or insulating, which we can do.

What does the fault code on my boiler mean?

Codes vary between models and even between versions of the same model, so check the manual for yours. Put the code in our quote form and the engineer will know what to bring.

Vaillant playing up?

Pick the symptoms and any fault code. A Gas Safe engineer will call you back.
