Like-for-like or a change
Swapping a combi for a combi in the same spot is the cheapest job. Converting from a system, regular or back boiler adds labour, materials and usually a day.

The honest answer is “it depends”, but on a short list of things you can check yourself. Here’s what changes the price, what a fair quote should include, and how to get a fixed one in two minutes.
Gas Safe registeredNo. 567789What changes the price
Two homes with the same boiler can have very different installation costs. These are the reasons.
Swapping a combi for a combi in the same spot is the cheapest job. Converting from a system, regular or back boiler adds labour, materials and usually a day.
A new position means new gas, water and condensate runs and a new flue. Same wall is cheap; a different room or the loft costs more.
A straightforward wall flue is simplest. Roof flues, long flue runs and awkward positions near windows or boundaries need more parts and time.
A flue on the first floor or above, or in a tight spot over a conservatory, can need a ladder system or tower.
Brand, output and warranty length make the biggest difference to the parts cost. A larger output costs more but only helps if your home needs it.
Combis can need more gas than the old boiler. If the pipe from the meter is undersized it has to be upgraded.
Basic time and temperature controls are included by law. A smart thermostat or weather compensation costs more and saves gas.
A heavily sludged system may need a power flush rather than a chemical clean before the new boiler is connected.

Holding two quotes side by side? Check both include these. If one doesn’t, it isn’t cheaper, it’s smaller.
Disconnected safely, taken away and disposed of properly, along with any old tanks or cylinder we take out.
Old radiators are full of sludge that kills new boilers. The system is flushed and dosed with inhibitor, as the regulations and every manufacturer require.
Fitted under the boiler to catch the sludge and rust that circulate in older systems, before it reaches the heat exchanger.
Every new gas boiler in England needs time and temperature controls, and a combi needs an extra energy-saving measure such as a smart thermostat with optimisation.
Flue position is tightly regulated near windows, doors, boundaries and under eaves. We check it, and fit a new flue kit with the boiler.
Condensing boilers drain water through a small pipe. Run outside, it can freeze and shut the boiler down in a cold snap, so we route and size it to avoid that.
The commissioning record for your boiler, filled in and signed. Manufacturers ask for it before honouring a warranty claim.
Fitting a boiler is notifiable work. We notify Building Control through the Gas Safe Register, and you get a compliance certificate in the post.
Most manufacturers need registering within 30 days of fitting or the warranty is shorter. We do it for you, in your name.
Running costs
A modern condensing boiler set up properly, with the flow temperature turned down and decent controls, can use noticeably less gas than one fitted and left on factory settings. Ask us to set yours up for low-temperature running.
Warranty length matters too. A longer manufacturer warranty, which depends on the brand and on the boiler being serviced every year, can save the cost of a repair or two over the boiler’s life. See boiler servicing for what that involves.
FAQ
Because the boiler is only part of the price. The flue, the position, the gas supply and the state of your system change the total more than the brand does. A price that ignores those is a guess, and guesses grow on the day. Our quote form asks about all of them so the price you get is the price you pay.
Usually, yes. With your answers and a few photos of the boiler, the flue outside and the pipes underneath, most straightforward replacements can be priced remotely. If something needs a closer look, we arrange a quick visit.
Not always, but check what’s missing. Compare whether each quote includes the system clean, a magnetic filter, compliant controls, a new flue, removal of the old boiler, Building Regulations notification and warranty registration.
Government schemes mostly fund insulation and low-carbon heating rather than new gas boilers, and eligibility depends on income, benefits and the home’s energy rating. Check the GOV.UK energy grants pages or Croydon Council for what’s open now.
