Before we arrive

Six things worth checking first

These fix a surprising number of “emergencies”, and they’re all safe to try yourself.

  • Check the pressure

Below 1 bar on the gauge? Top it up to about 1.5 bar on the filling loop, following the manual, and reset.

  • Check the gas and power

Do the hob and other gas appliances work? Is there credit on a prepay meter? Is the boiler’s fused spur switched on?

  • Look at the condensate pipe

In a frost, the plastic pipe running outside can freeze. Pour warm (not boiling) water along it, then reset the boiler.

  • Reset once, not ten times

If it locks out again straight away, stop. Note the fault code and call us.

  • Keep warm safely

Electric heaters and the immersion heater (if you have a cylinder) can tide you over. Never use outdoor gas or paraffin heaters indoors.

  • Isolate a leak

Put a bowl under it, keep water away from electrics, and turn off the boiler. Don’t take the casing off.

Common emergencies

What we’re usually called out for

No heating or hot water

Often ignition, a failed pump or diverter valve, or low pressure. Bring the fault code if there is one.

Leaking boiler

A failed seal, pump or relief valve, or a corroded heat exchanger. Turn the boiler off and catch the water.

Keeps locking out

Repeated lockouts point to a real fault. Resetting over and over can make it worse.

Fault code you don’t recognise

Put the code in the form. It tells the engineer which part is likely needed.

Not an emergency, but still not right? See boiler repair for common faults, or our pages on Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi fault codes.
