Common faults

What’s your boiler doing?

The faults we’re called out to most in Croydon, what usually causes them, and what’s safe to check yourself first. Never remove the boiler’s casing: only a Gas Safe engineer should work inside it.

Losing pressure

Pressure dropping below 1 bar usually means a leak somewhere in the system, a failing pressure relief valve or a flat expansion vessel.

Try first: Top it up to about 1.5 bar using the filling loop, following the instructions in your boiler’s manual. If it drops again within days, it needs looking at.

No hot water, heating works

On a combi this is often the diverter valve or a limescale-blocked heat exchanger. South London’s hard water doesn’t help.

Try first: Check the hot water isn’t turned down or switched off on the boiler’s controls.

No heating, hot water works

Commonly a thermostat or programmer fault, a stuck diverter valve, or a failed pump or motorised valve.

Try first: Turn the room thermostat up a few degrees and check the programmer is calling for heat.

Leaking or dripping

Leaks come from worn seals, a failing pump, a corroded heat exchanger or the pressure relief valve discharging.

Try first: Catch the drip, keep it away from electrics, and don’t take the casing off. Call us.

Banging, kettling or gurgling

Usually sludge or limescale in the heat exchanger, air in the system, or a pump problem.

Try first: Bleed any radiators that are cold at the top, then re-check the pressure afterwards.

Fault code or locked out

Every make has its own codes. Ignition faults, low pressure and flame-loss codes are the most common we see.

Try first: Note the code, then press reset once. If it locks out again, don’t keep resetting it. Send us the code.

Cuts out in cold weather

If it stops during a frost, the condensate pipe running outside has very likely frozen and blocked.

Try first: Pour warm (not boiling) water along the outside pipe to thaw it, then reset the boiler.

Won’t ignite

Faulty ignition electrodes, a gas valve problem, a blocked flue or a supply issue.

Try first: Check other gas appliances work and that the meter has credit if it’s prepay.

Repair or replace

We’ll tell you if it’s not worth fixing

Not every boiler should be repaired. If yours is well past ten years old, the part is expensive or discontinued, or it’s the third call-out this winter, putting the money towards a replacement may be the better deal. We give you the repair price first and let you decide.

And if it is worth fixing, an annual service is the best way to keep it that way. Most breakdowns we see in January started as something a service would have caught in September.

How it works

How a repair works

  1. 1

    Tell us what it’s doing

Pick the symptoms, the make and any fault code in the form, or call us. A photo of the display saves a lot of guesswork.

  2. 2

    We call you back

An engineer talks it through, tells you if there’s anything safe to try yourself, and books a visit if it needs one.

  3. 3

    Diagnose and fix

We find the fault, tell you what it needs and what it costs before doing anything. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it will take.

  4. 4

    Safety checked

Before we leave we check the boiler is burning and venting safely, and tell you honestly if it’s worth repairing again.

FAQ

Boiler repair questions

Which boiler makes do you repair?

All the common makes you’ll find in Croydon homes, including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Viessmann, Glow-worm, Potterton and Vokera. Pick the make in the quote form so we can check parts before we arrive.

My boiler is still under warranty. Should I call you?

Call the manufacturer first. Most warranties require their own engineers to carry out repairs, and a third-party repair can void the cover. If the warranty has run out or the manufacturer can’t help, we can.

Do you do emergency boiler repairs?

Yes. Choose “Today, it’s an emergency” in the form or ring us, and tell us if anyone at home is elderly, very young or unwell so we can put them first.

Is it worth repairing an old boiler?

Sometimes. A cheap, common part on a reliable boiler is worth fixing at almost any age. A major part on an older boiler often isn’t. We tell you the cost of the repair before doing it, and if a replacement makes more sense we’ll say so.

I can smell gas. What should I do?

Call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999, any time. Turn the gas off at the meter if you can, open doors and windows, and don’t use switches or anything that could cause a spark. Once it’s been made safe, we can repair the fault.
