System boiler installation in Shirley

Up towards Shirley Hills and Spring Park, Shirley’s larger detached homes have more bathrooms and more hot water demand, and a system boiler with a cylinder is often still the right answer. We replace those, and fit them in 1930s semis where a combi won’t keep up.

Two kinds of system boiler job in Shirley

In the bigger detached houses, the job is usually replacing a system boiler that’s already there. The cylinder may be fine, or it may be due too. Either way the new boiler is sized to the heat loss of the house and the cylinder to the number of bathrooms in use at once.

In the 1930s semis, the starting point is often a back boiler or a regular boiler with tanks in the loft. Most of those go to a combi. But if the house has been extended with a second bathroom, or your mains flow is on the weak side for a combi, a system boiler with a cylinder can be the better fit. Still got a back boiler? See back boiler replacement in Shirley.

For system boilers in general see system boiler installation, and for repairs and servicing locally, our Shirley area page.

Combi or system?

How we decide what to recommend

We don’t assume. These 4 checks decide it.

  1. 1

    Count the showers

How many bathrooms and showers are used at the same time on a busy morning.

  2. 2

    Measure the mains

Pressure and flow into the house. Most of Shirley is fine, but we measure rather than assume.

  3. 3

    Find the space

Is there room for a cylinder, usually the airing cupboard, and a route for its pipework?

  4. 4

    Size to heat loss

The boiler is sized to the house as it is now, including any extension or loft room.

What goes in

A system boiler set-up, part by part

System boiler

Pump and expansion vessel built in. Usually goes where the old boiler was, or in the kitchen or garage.

Hot water cylinder

Vented, fed from a loft tank, or unvented, fed from the mains. The choice depends on your mains flow.

Loft tanks

The heating expansion tank goes. The cold water tank goes too with an unvented cylinder.

Controls

Separate timing for heating and hot water, with room temperature control, as Boiler Plus requires.

Clean system

Flushed and dosed with inhibitor to BS 7593, with a magnetic filter to protect the new boiler.

Before you choose anyone

Six questions to ask any boiler installer

Including us. A good installer will be glad you asked.

  1. 01

“Can I see your Gas Safe ID card?”

Check the card is current and covers gas boilers. It’s on the back.

  2. 02

“How have you sized the boiler?”

A good answer mentions your bathrooms, hot water use and water flow, not just bedrooms.

  3. 03

“Is the price fixed, and what isn’t included?”

You want a written price that lists the work, not an estimate that grows on the day.

  4. 04

“Will you clean the system first?”

Fitting a new boiler to dirty water shortens its life and can affect the warranty.

  5. 05

“Who registers the warranty and notifies Building Control?”

Both should be done for you, in your name.

  6. 06

“What happens if something goes wrong after you leave?”

Know who to call, and how the warranty works with the installer.

FAQ

System boiler questions from Shirley

Is my water pressure good enough for an unvented cylinder?

Most of Shirley is fine, but we measure your pressure and flow before recommending one. If it’s weak, a vented cylinder fed from the loft tank still works well.

Can I keep my existing cylinder?

Sometimes. If it’s in good condition and suits the new boiler, we can reconnect it. If it’s old or slow to heat, replacing it while the system is drained makes sense.

We’re in a 1930s semi with one bathroom. Do we need a system boiler?

Probably not. One bathroom usually suits a combi, which frees the airing cupboard and loft. See combi boiler installation.

Do you cover Spring Park and Monks Orchard?

Yes. Put your postcode in the quote form to confirm. We also cover Addiscombe and Selsdon.

Where will you park?

Most Shirley homes have a driveway, which makes bringing in a cylinder and taking out the old one simple.
